August 10th - River Critters & Wildlife on the Iowa
a delightful day on the Iowa River learning about the creatures
who live there from Dr. Jim Pease while enjoying a leisurely
paddle. A limit of 20 boats, so get registered early! The
adventure will start at Schwob Landing in Wapello and end a
Cappy Russell Access near Oakville. 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
August 22nd and 24th - Hunter Education
great way to get ready for the upcoming hunting season.
The Aug. 22nd class will be at American Legion Hall Post 100 in
Columbus Junction from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Aug. 24
session will be held at Langwood Educaiton Center from 8:00 am
to 4:30 pm. The course will consist of classroom lessons,
as well as, live fire and shooting demonstrations.
Students must be 11 years old to take the class. You must
attend both days to receive a certificate. You must
preregister online at
www.iowadnr.gov/training. You can call DNR at

September 7th - Running Wild
the unique thrill of a walk/run at the Port Louisa National
Wildlife Refuge. There will be 3 and 5 mile courses that
loop past wetlands and wildlife habitat.

September 7th - eXtreme adventures - Nature at Night
youth in 6th-8th grades. Explore the changes as the sun sets
through a night hike, activities, and games. And of course
a campfire! You will need to dress in layers and bring a
water bottle. Fee $5.00
September 14th - Musc-Lo-Des Tri-County Pedal
great chance to ride you bike past beautiful scenery and stop a
scenic natural and historical areas. This will be the
first annual bike ride along the Mississippi River Trail from
Muscatine to Burlington. Proceeds from the ride will be
used to for the shoulder paving project along Highway 90.
Ride will begin at 9:00 am at the Boat landing in Muscatine.
September 21st - The Burris City Story
to the Toolesboro Mounds & Museum to learn about the history of
Burris City (at junction of Iowa & Miss. Rivers) one of the
local Mississippi River ghost towns from Ron Kerry. 9:00
September 21st - History Float
chance to spend a day on the river from Cappy Russell Access to
the Toolesboro Landing and learn about the history both the Iowa
and Mississippi Rivers. Your host will be naturalist,
Kathy Dice. 10:00 am. Free.
October 5th - eXtreme adventures: Archery
out if Katniss or Robin Hood are in your blood! You will
get some lessons and practive with bow & arrows, then test your
skills at various individual and team challenges. Virginia
Grove Recreation area. Fee: $5.00
October 19th - Youth Pheasant Hunt
great way to start the hunting season. Youth ages 12 - 15
who have taken the Hunter Safety course can participate in this
guided youth pheasant hunt. There will be trap shooting,
educational sessions and of course a pheasant hunt! Space
is limited to 12 youth. Applicaiton forms available.
8:00 am to 4:30 pm At Louisa County Gun Club. August
October 26th - Halloween Hike
Louisa County Conservation and a host of volunteers will be
ready to provide the annual entertaining, educational and funny,
night of fun in the forest. Volunteers needed - call LCC.
Start at 6:45. At Virginia Grove Recreation Area. Cost
$3:00/adults and $1:00/kids. Reservations needed.
November 3rd - eXtreme adventures: Fire Building
various methods for starting your own fire and what works best
for you. The night will end with hot dogs over the fire,
if you can build one! Youth in 6th - 8th greade.
